The world’s oldest football club, Sheffield FC, are targeting promotion into the big league after partnering with Hydra Creative.
The deal is one of a series of dual ventures aimed at kick starting the team’s ambitions to get back in the top flight of Google’s search rankings.
Nicknamed “The Club”, football’s old guard outfit signed up as part of our January SEO Transfer Window campaign.
Throughout the month of January, we’ve been offering businesses the chance to sign up and get a free website review and professional advice on how to outrank their rivals on Google.
The Northern Premier League side, which describes itself as ‘the home of football’, wanted to raise their game and snapped up the opportunity to intensify promotional efforts off the pitch.
As well as a new website launching soon, the Club recently signed a new kit deal with Dutch supplier, Copa.
The partnership with Hydra Creative will work to improve Sheffield FC’s online search results as part of its World’s First Football Club campaign.
Sheffield FC chairman, Richard Tims, was over the moon with the Hydra Creative partnership.
“We are delighted to be partnering with Hydra Creative to support our ongoing strategy to develop the brand and communicate the history of The World’s Oldest Football Club and the beautiful game.
We have several exciting projects in the works and our partnership with Hydra Creative will be integral to deliver the message of The World’s First.”
Google Partner, Hydra Creative, will be working closely with the Club during the rest of the season, and is excited for the new partnership.
Hydra Creative’s business development manager, Keith Tarry, described the partnership as a major ‘coup’ and wonderful opportunity to work with a truly historic football team:
“Signing up the world’s first football club during our SEO Transfer Window campaign is a major win for Hydra Creative and is a clear indication of what we have planned for this year.
We’re thrilled to be working with an organisation with such an historical background. We can’t wait to get stuck in and move Sheffield FC up the Google rankings table so football fans the world over will be able to easily find out information on where the beautiful game actually started.”
Sheffield FC background
It all started in 1855 when two members of a Sheffield cricket club organised an informal kick-about without any official rules. The pioneering Nathaniel Creswick and William Prest took their inspired idea a step further two years later, officially forming Sheffield Football Club, the world’s first football club.
The initial meeting of the club took place on 24 October 1857 at Parkfield House in Highfield, Sheffield. Games were played among members and included Married versus Singles matches and Professionals versus The Rest.
So popular was the new sport, that Creswick and Prest decided to play by the book, creating the Sheffield Rules the following year. By 1860 Sheffield FC had been joined by another Sheffield team, Hallam FC, starting a friendly rivalry that exists to this day.
Officially recognised by FIFA as the oldest football club in the world, Sheffield FC now boasts teams that reflect the wide popularity of the modern game, including Sheffield FC Women, disability, Futsal and walking football teams.

January SEO Transfer Window
Hydra Creative’s own team of off field creatives used the frenetic world of football’s January Transfer Window to carry perhaps the most important digital marketing message of the year – Google’s planned search ranking shake up scheduled for Spring.
The campaign reminds businesses to prepare for planned major changes to Google’s algorithms, as well as the importance of keeping up with the ongoing challenges of search engine optimisation (SEO).
Google has earmarked March for its Mobile First changes, when desktop versions will no longer be ranked in Google’s search pages.
Later in the Spring, Google’s focus is on page load speeds, stability and reliability as part of its ongoing drive to improve user experience.
If you feel let down by your SEO company, or simply haven’t the time or skills to carry out your own SEO, it’s time to transfer to Hydra. Sheffield FC did.
