What is time-lapse video?

A time-lapse video is a creative filming technique that captures slow-moving events over an extended period and speeds them up to create a fast-paced sequence. This is achieved by taking images at set intervals, every few seconds, minutes, or hours depending on your subject, and then playing them back at a standard frame rate.

In traditional video, recording and playback speeds are aligned. In time-lapse videos, the capture rate is much slower, which means that when the footage is played back, time appears to move faster. The result is a visual that highlights patterns and changes that might otherwise go unnoticed, such as revealing the time and dedication invested in construction projects.

Key uses of time-lapse videos across different industries

Time-lapse videos are very versatile, making them suitable for use across a wide range of industries and purposes:

  • Construction and industrial projects – A construction site time-lapse can showcase months of progress in minutes, creating a compelling visual record of the development of the project, from first foundations to finishing touches.
  • Social media and marketing – Capture audience attention quickly with a fast-paced, visually engaging video that boosts traffic and gives people a reason to pause when scrolling through content.
  • Scientific research – With time-lapse video production, you can observe and monitor slow processes, such as bacteria growth or environmental changes over time.
  • Nature and environment – Gives the ability to capture and document plant growth, weather patterns, and natural transformations over time.

What are the benefits of using time-lapse video?

Time-lapse video offers a range of benefits for businesses, such as:

  • Increased engagement – Dynamic visuals keep viewers watching for longer and encourages more interactions, such as clicks, follows, and likes on social media.
  • Enhanced storytelling – Complex processes are simplified into compelling narratives that can elevate brand perception.
  • Progress documentation – Ideal for construction and long-term projects, providing clear visual updates which can be used to show stakeholders and clients the progress of a project.
  • Versatility – Time-lapse videos are great for marketing, social media, internal reporting, and creative projects, as they transform what might be a long and monotonous event into an engaging piece of content.

Expert insights: Behind the time-lapse process

We spoke to Matt, our head of video at Hydra Creative, to understand what goes into creating a successful time-lapse project:

What’s the process?

Every time-lapse filming project begins with a location visit to assess the space and determine the best camera placement. This step is crucial for understanding angles, lighting, the duration required for filming, and finding the best vantage point for capturing the action.

From there, client collaboration plays a key role as it defines the desired outcome, including whether the time-lapse will stand alone or be part of a larger video, which helps shape any future decisions. Camera intervals are carefully calculated depending on the subject and duration of the video, ensuring the final footage aligns with the project goals.

Faster paced events may require more frequent shots while longer construction projects may need wider intervals between captures. The team at Hydra Creative produced a video for Skills People Group’s Skills Swap Challenge, and the video included a time-lapse segment, which, through its fast-paced format, evidenced how the organisation helps people develop construction skills to support them in their future careers.

Once everything is planned, the camera is set up on-site, with careful attention given to how long the camera needs to remain in place, how many days of filming are required, and any potential risks related to the placement.

Choosing the right subject

Choosing the right subject depends on the story being told. For events, our team often opts for high and wide angles to capture the full scale of activity, such as staging, crowd movement, or exhibition builds. The goal is to show the transformation from a single viewpoint.

For time-lapse video production for construction companies, or outdoor shoots in general, there are additional considerations. Cameras often need waterproof housing to protect them against the elements, especially when filming over long periods.

Above all, communication with the client is essential. Understanding what they want to highlight ensures the camera is positioned in a way that captures the most important moments and delivers maximum impact.

Favourite part of time-lapse projects?

For Matt, the most rewarding part is seeing the final result.

After all of the meticulous planning, calculations, and setup, there’s a real sense of satisfaction in watching the footage come together, especially when it showcases the scale, effort, and transformation of a project.

It’s also an opportunity to see how a time-lapse can elevate production value, turning something familiar into something visually interesting for audiences across platforms, including social media and website pages.

Favourite time-lapse project?

One standout project was the recent GUTS (Get Up To Speed) event at Magna Science Adventure Centre. GUTS provides a platform for businesses to showcase their industries, products, and services to the next generation of school-leavers, whilst also helping to address future skill needs.

Compared to previous videos we filmed for this event, the use of time-lapse added a new dimension, enhancing the overall production quality and giving viewers a much stronger sense of the scale of the event. This demonstrates how a promotional video can be transformed into something new with the right creative technique.

What lessons have the team at Hydra Creative learned from creating time-lapse videos?

Preparation is everything.

Unlike other types of video production, time-lapse isn’t always flexible. If something goes wrong, such as incorrect setup, poor positioning leading to the equipment being disturbed, or unclear client expectations, it can be difficult or even impossible to recreate the footage.

That’s why:

  • Pre-production is critical
  • Clear client communication is essential
  • Every detail needs to be planned in advance

While other video shoots can adapt on the day, time-lapse requires precision from the start, with no room for error. Events in particular are time sensitive, as once they are over, the opportunity is gone.

Final thoughts

Time-lapse video production is often associated with construction and events, but its potential goes far beyond that.

From education and scientific research to medical visualisation, such as tracking bacterial growth, this technique can bring slow and complex processes to life in a way that’s both engaging and easy to understand.

Ultimately, time-lapse is a filming technique that transforms how stories are told visually, adding depth, clarity, and impact to a wide range of projects.
