The Challenge

Portobello RMF specialise in the design and manufacture of pressure vessels, heat exchangers and bespoke fabrications. They wanted to improve their online presence as their old website was six years old – it was outdated and had been experiencing costly, harmful security issues.

Their existing site had previously been targetted by hackers - this was resolved, but it triggered a realisation – their website needed an upgrade. Portobello were looking to expand their business by increasing their customer-base and recruiting employees – it was vital that their website would encourage this progression. Portobello approached Hydra for help to improve their prospects online.


We designed and built a new website with advanced security and up to date coding. Along with this, the main aims were to create a heavily-optimised website to help drive SEO traffic, with clear calls to action visible on each page of the website, prompting customers to make initial contact. Each webpage has been designed with unique metadata to target the right users for the content.

Many Engineering companies struggle with a shortage of skills in the industry. To combat this, Portobello RMF wanted to recruit more local apprentices, supporting them in developing their skills whilst working for the company. The Apprenticeship area of Portobello's website therefore had to have all of the relevant information and be editable through the CMS (Content Management System) to increase potential interest. SEO was also key – the webpage needed to be easily found by the right individuals on search engines.

Another focus was the idea of a live chat box accessible throughout the website, to drive user engagement, leading to enquiries. Similarly, we produced another conversion opportunity in the form of a prominent 'Request Company Profile' button, which enhances user intrigue.

Throughout the development process, we worked closely with Portobello. By working together, we could combine our thoughts and ideas, bringing them to life and encouraging creativity. Client satisfaction is always of the highest importance to us.


Portobello's bespoke new site is clearly organised, with all the necessary information at the user's fingertips. There are plenty of call to action buttons, successfully increasing customer interaction – the live messaging and brochure request feature are both quick and simple to use.

The new website has the user in mind – with the design and SEO, consumers shouldn't struggle to find their desired webpage. The theme embodies Portobello's branding colours throughout, creating an approachable and professional finish, as well as effectively projecting the brand.
