Rotherham Borough Council and Clifton Park Museum have launched a bespoke online showcase for their culturally significant Rockingham Pottery Pattern Book, thanks to a collaboration with Sheffield based Digital Creative Agency, Hydra Creative Limited. The new site will allow lovers of local history and serious historians alike to browse the Rockingham Pattern book in its entirety. This is a unique and unprecedented opportunity for the general public to explore the 366 pages of the Pattern Book, and view the still-vibrant hand painted pottery designs .
In addition to exploring the pattern book, visitors to the site can learn more about the people behind the pottery – not just the factory owners, but also the everyday workers who relied on their skills to create the beautiful pieces that were bought by some of the greatest families of the day. There is also a fascinating timeline that takes the reader through the rise and eventual fall of the Rockingham Pottery, bringing vividly to life the struggles faced by a business trying to avoid bankruptcy at the very same time as they were producing commissioned tableware for Gentry and even Royalty.
Creative Director at Hydra Creative, Ryan Daniels, said of the new site: “Rotherham Council’s Museums, Galleries and Heritage section knew the website needed to be extensive but still wanted the site to be user-friendly, full of information about this incredible book and pottery collection, yet not overpowering to the casual visitor. We achieved this through the creation of an easy to navigate, fully bespoke solution with a powerful custom built search engine integral to the site. We also worked together with the team at Clifton Park Museum to create two interactive applications, which would enhance the collection for children and younger visitors.”
